The Picture of Dorian Gray is an opera in two acts by the American composer Lowell Liebermann, from a libretto by the composer, based on the novel of the same name by Oscar Wilde.
The Picture of Dorian Gray had its world premiere at the Monte Carlo Opera on 8 May 1996, in a production by John Cox, conducted by Steuart Bedford.
Its American premiere was on 5 February 1999 by Florentine Opera (with Nancy Shade as The Whore) at Uihlein Hall, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and it was broadcast on NPR’s World of Opera.
The Center City Opera Theater in Philadelphia commissioned a reorchestration of the opera for chamber orchestra. The world premiere of this version was performed June 6, 2007 at the Perelman Theater in the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in a production by Leland Kimball, conducted by Andrew M. Kurtz.
